Plate-only ALPR matches a string of characters against a hotlist. A cloned plate passes that check by design. AMVIS adds the half of the problem cameras ignore: the vehicle itself.

On-device OCR lifts the plate and pulls the vehicle it is registered to: make, model, year, colour.

A vision model reads the actual car in frame, independent of the plate: a BMW coupe, not the Honda Civic the plate claims.

Flag the mismatch

When the registration and the vehicle disagree, the officer gets an alert in the cruiser. The one signal a plate-only reader can never produce.

An alert is a lead, not a verdict. A mismatch tells the officer this vehicle is worth a second look. It is not a determination that a crime occurred, and it is not grounds on its own. Vision models misread cars, so the alert shows what it saw and leaves the judgement where it belongs.

The safest place for evidence is the car it came from.

AMVIS runs entirely on a compute unit in the vehicle. No raw video, no vehicle profiles, nothing leaves the cruiser. That is not a policy promise. It is how the system is built.

Cloud ALPR runs headlong into Canadian data-residency law. Genetec had to rebuild its cloud product inside Canadian data centres in 2025 to keep police data in the country. AMVIS never had the problem, because the data never moves. Compliant with Quebec Law 25 and PIPEDA by default.
